Ostrander site of April 15 COSG meeting From 2 til 5:00 p.m.
Kim & Dana Davis will host this month’s meeting at their home near Ostrander from 2:00 til 5:00 p.m.
Be sure to attend to see what Dana has done since we met there last Spring. His biggest project has been constructing a custom trestle to carry his upper loop across a wide ravine. I’m sure he’ll fill us in on how he really started from scratch to cut the wood and build the trestle.
The Spree will be the topic of the business meeting beginning at 3:00 p.m. Input from members who helped and those who attend will be appreciated as we evaluate the positive and negatives of the Spree we hosted.

A proposal from the Baltimore AF Club
- John Myers, vice presidentDavid Blum from the Baltimore (MD) S Club was chatting with me at the Spree Banquet last Saturday and was inquiring about John Gafney's Vendor table operations.
David express an interest in having us staff a table(s) at the National S Gauge Convention in July 10 to 14 in Baltimore doing a similar activity that Gafney did for our Spree. David stated they have no time now to put such concept together, but if our Club did, they would love it!He said we could charge the vendors any amount to sell their wares at the National show, and we can pocket the profit (after expenses e.g. table rental, merchandise sold, shipping, etc). David wasn't interested in playing any role in this venture, just making the offer to us.
Any interest? Obviously, some club members attending the National SGauge Convention would be required.

President’s Message
- David StilpTo start off, I would like to say a big thank you to all our club members who have worked so hard promoting, organizing and working this years S spree. Running the layout, setting up and dismanteling the layout, working the registration table, the hourly door drawings, hospitality room, etc. took a lot of hard work. I think you'll agree it was time well enjoyed by all who worked and attended. Thankfully all the tables sold out. I know Art had a few last minute phone calls and e-mails requesting a table or two. I was pleased to hear John Gafney's absentee dealers sold several hundred dollars worth of merchandise.
The layout room, holding nine layouts, was very spacious, we could probably add one more layout and have enough space. Thanks to all the clubs and individuals who brought their layouts. I had a lot of positive comments from the public who came to see them. I believe 6 clinics were scheduled. One cancelled due to illness. It went pretty well. I had the opportunity to attend the clinic on Train Master Command Control which I would like to get into in the future. It sounds easy to get into and I have extra manuals if anyone is interested.
The vendors tables were full of items for purchase; from vintage American Flyer Trains to new Flyonel. Several scale dealers showed there items as well. Laser kits for cities and towns were available. If you needed parts for flyer, Fred Jester and Art Lofton had a nice selection to get that old loco running down the track. Thank you to all the vendors who attended the show and are supporting S Gauge today.
The train auction went very well. We had a lot of attendees bring items for auction. Some items were two complete American Flyer sets. Each sold for under $350. Other items included a talking station, a brass locomotive, a 12 pak of 1/64th pick up trucks, an A.F.EP-5 locomotive, some old flyer sets, some train videos, American Models passenger cars, etc. It lasted for an hour. The best part is that we had a professional auctioneer auctioning the items. I know Lowell Henthorn was relieved that he didn't have to auction the items this year. I know all who attended had a good time.

Retirement center hosts club layout February 18
Our club will be doing a different type of show next weekend, February 17 and 18th.
We have been invited by club member Gary Stewart to operate the portable layout for The Worthington Retirement Center residents on Sunday, February 18 from 1 until 4:00 p.m. We will set up on Saturday, Feb. 17 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. (See map on page 2).
The home is providing dinner for club members who will be operating the layout on Sunday. To assure the center has enough food for COSG members, RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE BY WEDNESDAY, February 14. For
more information or directions, read "Dinner Reservation Details" below.Following is a news release explaining why the layout will be operating Sunday.
Local train club to help retirees stay fit
Gahanna, Ohio—The Central Ohio S Gaugers model railroad club will bring its large portable layout to The Worthington Retirement Residence in Gahanna for a one-day show on Sunday, February 17, 2007. Show hours will be from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The show is open to the public and there is no admission charge.
The show will be part of The Worthington’s "Fitness Express," a 37-day imaginary train trip from Halifax, Canada to the Pacific Coast then south. Residents will progress along the route by logging minutes on the Worthington’s exercise bike or by walking. Nearly 300 buildings in North America will be competing to accumulate the largest aggregate number of exercise minutes.
The multi level model train layout was built in 1987 by the Central Ohio S Gaugers. Presently the club has 57 members and meets monthly at club members' homes. The layout measures 13 by 20 feet and the four loops of track originally were hand laid. The layout is stored in a specially built 17 foot trailer. It takes about an hour for the layout to be set up at a show. The club has shown this layout throughout Ohio and one time in West Virginia.
"S" gauge refers to the ratio of the models to real trains. In this case, models are 1/64 as large as actual trains. This places S scale models about midway in size between the very popular HO and classic Lionel trains. Once popular in the 1940s and 1950s, S gauge appeared doomed when its principal supplier, American Flyer, closed its doors in the late 1960s. Today new engines and cars are available from several companies, and come with wireless remote control and sound effects.
The Worthington Retirement Residence, located on Johnstown Road in Gahanna, offers gracious retirement living, with month-to-month apartment rent, three meals a day provided, all utilities and light housekeeping included. It is managed by Holiday Retirement Corp., the world’s largest provider of senior residences.
Dinner reservation details
"COSG Members are invited to be our guests for lunch in our lovely dining room. So that our chef can make proper preparations PLEASE CONFIRM your attendance no later than February 14. We serve our mid-day meal promptly at 12:30 pm. You should plan on being in the dining room for about 45 minutes for salad, entree and dessert. A couple of us will be able to operate the layout for the public while the others are eating.
You can reply to this e-mail or call us at 614-933-8640.

The Worthington is located at the corner of E.Johnstown Road and Riva Ridge Blvd. intersection. East Johnstown Road is Rt. 62, and the Center can be reached driving south on Rt. 62 from Morse Rd. or north from Gahanna on Rt. 62. If you care to look up the location on Mapquest, key in the address "4541 E. Johnstown Road, 43230." The post office doesn't recognize this address but Mapquest will.

I believe that we will have the monthly meeting after the layout is shut off at 4:00 pm.
Minutes of January 28 meeting
President David Stilp called the meeting to order at 2:10 p.m. with 19 members present and 2 guests.
The October and November minutes were not available so no action was taken (no meeting was held in December)
David thanked all of those working on getting the Spree going and urged us to keep plugging away.
Timken tank car
John Frazier brought samples of the Des Plaines tank car that he is painting for the Timken Spree car. He indicated he’s not sure where the white stripe starts on the end and where it stops judging from the magazine photograph. He said the two cars might not be the exact replicas of the final car, but these samples will be as close as he possibly can get. The copy of the ad needs to go on the Spree website so potential customers can place orders for the car. John Myers will take care of this.
Treasurer’s report
Tom Brinker passed out copies of his report. Through December 06 there wasn’t much activity. For the Spree thus far, 49 tables have been sold along with 23 of the tank cars, and 7 banquet tickets. Tom said club members need to register and buy the cars to make this Spree successful.
FEBRUARY 2007______________________________________COSG NEWS_______________________________ PAGE 3
Banquet center pieces
John Myers showed a sample of a table center piece. Also discussed was a specially wrapped candy bar. A final suggestion was order five AM flatcars and 10 Krispy Kreme trucks to make our successful car from the last Spree and use them as prizes.
Makoy Room Sizes
Art Lofton visited the Makoy Center and measured the three rooms. He’s set up for 113 8-foot tables in the Dealer/Trade Room. We’re probably going to have to rent more tables over and above what the Makoy Center has. He indicated the biggest problem is the Layout Room and fitting in all the layouts. Expected are the Miami Valley layout, the Baltimore Maryland club layout, Bob Pardington layout from Michigan, Doug Millers modular Southern Tier Layout, and the Cuyahoga Valley Flyer layouts. Modular layouts include the NASG layout and the Pittsburgh Club layout. At this time Art doesn’t feel there is room nor do we have available operators to set up our club layout.
Auction
Art suggested that Lowell Henthorn work closely with Brenda and Ann getting the auction set up. Alan Evans reported that Lowell has laid out a form for listing the auction items, and this will be sent to Brenda and Ann to review.
Absentee Dealer tables
J
ohn Gafney was not present to explain in detail how we’ll display and sell a table to any dealer who cannot attend but wishes to have a table at the Spree. COSG members will man the tables, sell the items and return the unsold item and receipts to the dealer after the show.Concern was brought up that perhaps we should have an agreement with these absentee dealers about liability and maybe even a contract to lay down responsibility of COSG and the dealer. It was recommended that these tables be side by side so they could easily be watched by members. It was suggested that the Board get with John Gafney to go over specifics of his idea.
Spree shirts - "Wear green to be seen"
J
ohn Frazier displayed a bright Irish green tee shirt that John Gafney has suggested be worn by each one of our members during the Spree. This way attendees will recognize our club and ask for assistance or direction. The bright green with white embroidered COSG logo is easily spotted and will also be needed at each of the doors and throughout the Center for security. Only those individuals who have a special dealer name tag or a standard nametag will be allowed in the Trading Room or the Hospitality Room. Here’s the deal: Members who register by March 1 and will be assisting on any of the committees at the Spree will receive a green shirt with the COSG logo, paid by the club. If a member wants his or her name on the shirt, he will pay $4.00. Sizes are M, L and XL.
So to get a GREEN SHIRT, REGISTER BY THURSDAY, MARCH 1 and the club will place the orders.
Everyone who attends must register
Not registered? Each person attending, whether it be for one day or both, MUST REGISTER. This registration will allow you free access to the trading room, the hospitality room, and any of the clinics. Remember, the Spree isn’t just to buy S gauge, it’s to meet other S gaugers, see all different kinds of layouts, attend some informative clinics, and rest for awhile in the hospitality room. Your registration helps allow us to have all these features.
David thanked Pat and Bernie Gustina for their hosting the meeting and the excellent food and nifty train layout.
Respectfully submitted.
Alan Evans, secretary

Committee chairmen have met and reviewed their responsibilities. The committee with the most pressing need for members is security as we’ll need to insure dealers set up without non-dealer people getting into the room early. And during the Spree members will need to insure those going into the sales room or going upstairs to enjoy the hospitality room or attend clinics that they have paid for that privilege. We need enough members helping to divide the time into shifts.
We’re suggesting that our members plan to take a day off to help on Friday. With 57 on our membership roster, we should be able to cover all the positions required by utilizing shifts as opposed to being at the same location all day!

January, 2007 Newsletter

Our layout will be operating this weekend as part of the Great Train Expo. On both Saturday and Sunday the hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Lausche Building on the Ohio Expo Center.
A letter has been mailed to members and well as e-mail notification to encourage active participation in this show. This is an excellent opportunity for our club to talk to the railroad-interested public about S gauge, why we are involved in S, and the advantages of belonging to a club.
We’ll be setting up Friday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 so it isn’t a big rush to finish Saturday morning. Thus far six members indicated they will be there Friday evening to get things started. Some members have already volunteered to operate on either Saturday or Sunday, and this is fantastic!! But we can always use more members to stand outside the layout and talk to the public.
Gustinas host Sunday, January 28
Monthly club meeting in Westerville
With the Great Train Expo falling on our regular meeting weekend, we moved the monthly gathering was moved to the 28th with Bernie and Pat Gustina hosting. Time for this event will be 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at their home t 356 Wyndham Park South in Westerville.
Bernie has an L shaped layout, 8 x 16 and 4 x 8 which he is converting from Flyer track over to S Helper’s S-Trax system (track with roadbed). He utilized ¾" Homasote over ½" plywood for his table top construction. He can run two loops at one time (including a reverse loop in the middle), and his yard (4 x 8) is isolated from the other tracks. He began working on this layout (with the S Helper track) in November, and we’ll learn how he has used Woodland Scenics grass paper along with Plasticville and MTH buildings to fashion his future town and manufacturing area.
See enclosed map on page 2 for directions and pictures on Page 4.

President’s Message
Happy New Year to all. I hope you all enjoyed the holidays as much as I did. After being with my family and visiting relatives its great to get back into the worlds greatest hobby. We are starting a second count down, that being the S spree. The board had a meeting at my house on January 4th to further discuss the up coming train shows and the Spree ending with the picnic.
We have an active roster for the next several months and we are going to need EVERYONE’S help. My wife even stated she wanted to come and help. I about had a heart attack! Won't be able to spend any money but will appreciate the help and the company.
Spree activities are many, so we realize we need a lot of volunteers. Where do you fit in? We have registration, layout setup, dealer setup, security, directions, directing people at the center, train car orders, hospitality, layout operations, etc.
See where you can be of service to the club and the general public.
Our meeting this month will be at Bernie Gustina's. I hope to see some new faces. Don't forget to sign up for the show on the January 20th and 21st to set up, run trains and tear down.
Don't forget to register for the Spree, just because you are a club member we still need you to register.
ALL ABOARD!!

Club trailer damaged during hail storm
Last Wednesday night a big hail storm did a number on the club trailer parked behind the shop. The west side of the trailer has lots of pock marks made by the golf ball sized hail. Unfortunately the plastic skylight didn’t survive and some
PAGE 2 COSG NEWS OCTOBER 2006
water got inside during the storm. Fortunately the trains and most items are in plastic tubs so no damage. Only water I saw was on the floor beneath the skylight and some on the ends of the layout sections nearest the skylight.
Newly elected president David Stilp received my call Thursday morning and was quickly over here to repair the skylight (secured a piece of plastic-covered plywood over the hole). And Joe Stiffler, autobody repair member, indicated we should call our insurance company (our first claim) and have them look at the damage. I should see a representative this week, according to them.

New S stuff
Last week Bob Lamneck brought in his new Lionel Flyer to test on my shop layout. Looked good, ran great and the whistle is really impressive. The weak points seemed to be (as it was just being broken in) were the choo choo sound and the lack of a lot of smoke (was there, but light). All of the electronics were not operating as the 9 volt battery was not installed. All of the electronics are in the tender, there’s no wire between engine and tender.
Bob ordered his engine from Hobbyland in Reynoldsburg, and as of last Friday the second Lionel 4-8-4 was still for sale at Hobbyland. The clerk there wondered if he would ever sell the second one as they have not stocked any S gauge for some time. Did (or will) any COSG member surprise him?
I also tested the S Helper 2-8-0 with the locomatic control. You really need to have this control if you run AC sound. It ran just fine.

Special dinner meeting June 25th in Prospect
Instead of our usual club picnic in June, this year we’ll be going to the Hocking Valley Railroad Restaurant in Prospect, Ohio (south of Marion). Probably ten years ago the club visited that restaurant for a family get-together, and the atmosphere (G gauge overhead, lots of RR memorabilia and pictures on the wall), made for an interesting afternoon. We’ll be the only customers from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Rob Berridge talked to the restaurant recently and all they need one week before is the number of people who will be attending. SO WHAT WE NEED FROM EACH MEMBER is the number in your family who will be attending. The restaurant said we would not need to pay ahead of time, just pay when we finish as is normal restaurant procedure.
Please call in the number in your party to Rob Berridge (614-876-8857) or e-mail him at
roblynn@columbus.rr.com by Thursday, June 15thBe sure to reserve June 25 on your calendars for this outing.

Chuck Kline, 304-232-0124 American Flyer:Jeff Link’s paintings on display at CCAD; letter from president
Jeff’s wife Debbie Link notified me that Jeff’s paintings will be on display at the Canzani Building at the Columbus College of Art & Design (where he was a student and then professor for 40 years). They will be exhibited from May 12 through August.
"Jeff really loved being a part of the train club and events. So many of his paintings were dedicated and inspired by his trains," she wrote.
From Dennison Griffith, CCAD President:
To: Central Ohio S Gaugers:
"Thank you for your Scholarship contribution to CCAD in memory of Jeff Link. While we are mourning his passing it is uplifting to know that his legacy and many talents will live on through our students and your generosity. "

Take the Northwest Passage to Davis’s April 23
The April 23rd meeting (notice this is 4th Sunday of the month) is scheduled from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Dana and Kim Davis’ home near Ostrander (northwest of Columbus). Dana has been working on a multi –level layout using S Helper flex track and Homabed roadbed. Last time some of us saw the set-up was in April 2005 when we stored the layout sections and other "stuff" from the old trailer while the metal rack was being moved to the new trailer.Dana suggests those coming from Columbus drive northwest via Rt. 33 to Marysville and take Rt. 36 east 6 miles to Burnt Pond Road. Turn left (North) and continue 3 miles to 1623 (on your right). Their house sets back a long lane.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
---LARRY ROBERTSON
We are all deeply saddened by the recent loss of our member and friend, Jeff Link. Jeff contributed in a great many ways to COSG, as Secretary of the Board for two terms, Webmaster, scenery builder, fine-tuner of the video cam and enthusiastic layout assembler and operator at a large number of train shows. Most of all he was a very nice guy and a great friend. A number of COSG members were able to attend the memorial service for Jeff at the Columbus College of Art and Design, and we learned a lot about his valuable work as a faculty member and Dean at CCAD. We shall all miss Jeff very much.
On the layout and meeting front, we are rapidly approaching one of those busy weekends, which contain a train show and a monthly meeting. Our COSG layout is again appearing at the Buckeye Train Show at the Ohio State Fairgrounds, Lausche Building on Saturday, April 22 (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.), with layout set-up at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 21. Vice-President John Myers is contacting members by e-mail and phone, as we need help for setting up on Friday evening and several shifts of running followed by tear-down on Saturday. Please contact John and help him to fill his roster for the show.
Our regular monthly meeting will be at the home of Dana and Kim Davis in Ostrander, Ohio. I look forward to seeing the progress on Dana’s layout, and I hope to see as many members as possible at the Davis’ home on Sunday, April 23.
I remember our friend Jeff Link
- Alan Evans
I remember Jeff as a bundle of energy. He joined the club in February 1999 at a train show. Not long after that he took on the responsibility of COSG secretary (two 4-year terms).
Jeff’s ability as an artist was exemplified in his graphic design of the roller bearing logo for the Timken boxcar. He worked directly with American Models in determining what they needed to print the logo. The same was true with our current 4-bay hopper: Jeff studied the lettering on the original drawing and used some artistic "dithering" to duplicate the letters on the 1928-era hopper.
When we had a show Jeff was usually there to help carry in the layout and set it up. And he was there to operate his American Flyer trains when the show opened. He always seemed to have the latest offering from Lionel to run on the layout.
Before February’s meeting when I talked to him and he indicated he had broken his hip, I wondered if that would slow him down. Not. He was at Ken Mauck’s taking the minutes.
This month when I hadn’t heard from him (he had missed the March meeting and I had recorded the minutes), I mentioned to John Gafney on Thursday night that I needed to call Jeff as I had not heard from him. Unfortunately, at noon the next day his wife Debbie called and said that Jeff had died that morning at home.
Talk about the wind being knocked out of my sails! The task of notifying all the club members of his death was a hard one to swallow. Thanks to all of you who attended his memorial service at CCAD on that Sunday. As Larry mentions in his column, we learned from other friends who spoke at the memorial that Jeff was a person who worked tirelessly behind the scenes and never asked for or expected recognition. He had been a student and then a faculty member at CCAD for 40 of his 60 years, the last being Dean of Foundation Studies.
I also had the opportunity to work with Jeff on a professional level, printing a newsletter for a national art association that he served as editor. He was an easy customer to work for.
I know how Jeff enjoyed his cabin and boat at Lake Erie. One time he located me at Hoover Reservoir launching my boat, so he would occasionally tell me where the Hoover water level was since he drove by that lake every day on his way home.
I recall the time at the 1999 S Spree in Dayton when I went to eat dinner with him at Chi Chi’s. The no meat dish he ordered came with meat and he had to return it because he was a vegetarian. Several times we shared expenses and duties when he and I hosted the club meetings at my shop.
So the COSG has lost an active member and all of us have lost a good friend. I’m glad that you were a part of us Jeff -- we learned a lot. Thanks.

Busy weekend: Train show Saturday, club meeting Sunday
As they say, "Some days the dragon wins." This holds true for April 22 and 23.The Saturday show is in the Lausche Building at the Ohio Expo Center, just off I-71 and 17th Ave in North Columbus.
We’ll set up as much as we can on Friday night at 6:00 at the Lausche Bldg. Parking is free, but we have to be out of the building by 7:30 p.m.
At 9:00 Saturday morning the show opens, so operators need to be there at least by 8:15 a.m., or earlier to put the final touches on the layout. Tear-down time is 4:00. Parking will cost you $4.00 Saturday.
Sunday’s monthly meeting is from 2 until 5 p.m. at the Davis’s near Ostrander.
Which track to use?
From last month’s meeting at Charlie Berwinkle’s to this month’s and then in May at Lowell Henthorn’s, we S gaugers will have an opportunity to see the three brands of track available for layout construction.Charlie used both American Flyer and some K Line wide radius in constructing his layout.
Dana Davis this month has built his multi level layout using S Helper’s 40" flex track on ¼" Homabed roadbed.
Lowell incorporated American Models Code 148 flex track and switches in his Pennsylvania equipped layout.
So if you’re looking into the advantages and disadvantages of S track available, be sure to attend the upcoming meetings.

Probably ten years ago the club visited that restaurant for a family get-together, and the atmosphere (G gauge overhead, lots of RR memorabilia and pictures on the wall), made for an interesting afternoon.
In order to facilitate payment for the meal, we’ll be collecting money from members ahead of time. More on this in the next newsletters.
Be sure to reserve an opening of June 25 on your calendars for this outing – probably from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. There’s a miniature riding railroad near Waldo that we might contact, so stay tuned.
S Spree in Walnut Creek May 4 & 5
This year’s Spree, hosted by the Cuyahoga Valley S Gaugers, is next month in Walnut Creek, Ohio. This location is a departure from previous Spree locations, so it should be an interesting show. This is in the heart of Ohio’s Amish country. The show begins at 10:00 a.m. on Friday and runs through the Auction at 9:00 p.m on Saturday night.

A new S gauge club in Columbus??!!
In last month’s newsletter I printed the announcement of our club’s first official meeting in March 1985 to celebrate our 21 years of existence.
Humorously, I had several members ask me "what’s this new club that’s meeting this month?" It was only after they read the announcement carefully that the year was 1985 and not 2006!
I did enjoy writing the history of the club to let out newer members what transpired to get us where we are today. A followup article will be coming in a future newsletter. Incidentally, I called charter member Bob Brothers (in New Mexico) this week to talk trains for awhile and see how he was doing. (No trains in Albequerque, he says!) He said to tell our club members hello.
